Puerto Viejo is a small surf town, and that is part of its charm, but you do not stay in it. Casa Del Soul is a private home in Cahuita, about twenty minutes up the coast, with air-conditioned bedrooms, a full kitchen, WiFi, an open-air yoga deck, a private pool and a house manager for basic needs. You get the quiet of the jungle, with the town there when you want it.

For a retreat, Cahuita. It is calmer, sits beside Cahuita National Park and has a smaller nightlife scene, so you sleep. Puerto Viejo has more restaurants, surf and bars and is a short drive south, so you can visit for an evening and come home to stillness.

Costa Rica is one of the most stable countries in Central America, and the South Caribbean coast is a long-established tourist area. Use ordinary travel sense: do not leave valuables on the beach and use arranged transport at night. Arrival transfers can be coordinated so nobody lands alone after dark.

Yes, because the retreat does not happen in town. The house sits in the jungle outside Cahuita, and the schedule is built for rest: morning yoga on the deck, one excursion a day at most, dinner together and an early night. WiFi is there if you need it and easy to ignore if you do not.

Both are beautiful. The Caribbean side is greener, less built-up and has a different culture, Afro-Caribbean and Bribri, and a different calendar: September and October, the Pacific's wettest months, are usually the Caribbean's driest. If you want a resort strip, choose the Pacific. If you want one quiet house between rainforest and reef, this is the coast.
