ADVENTURE EXCURSIONS

Cahuita Adventure Tours: ATV, Zipline and Rafting

Cahuita adventure tours range from an ATV ride through the back roads to ziplining above the canopy, a guided waterfall hike in the hills and a day of whitewater rafting. These are the adventure excursions available to guests of Casa Del Soul, a private retreat home in Cahuita on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, about 20 minutes from Puerto Viejo. Every scheduled retreat includes three excursions, and which of these you can choose depends on your package. Celebration and hosted groups add them to their proposal.

Adventure excursions and which package includes them

Every scheduled retreat includes three excursions. On the 5-day Adventure & Transformation retreat, the Essential package has three preset outings: a guided waterfall hike, an ATV tour and a guided hike in Cahuita National Park. Signature guests choose three from five options, and Premier guests choose three from ten, which is where ziplining and whitewater rafting come in.

On the Wellness & Renewal retreat the same structure applies, so a wellness guest who wants one adventurous day can have it. Local operators run the tours; we coordinate the logistics for the ones included in your retreat. Wear closed shoes and tell us about injuries or concerns when you book.

ATV tour through the Cahuita back roads

A guided ATV tour typically follows farm tracks, dirt roads and stretches of secondary forest inland from the coast, with river crossings when the water allows. Mud is likely in any month; it is part of the appeal. Operators generally provide helmets and a lead guide, and riders with no experience are common, since the machines are usually automatic.

Operators set their own rules on driving licences, minimum ages and whether passengers can ride double, so check those details when the tour is confirmed. The ATV tour is a preset Essential excursion on the adventure retreat and a Premier choice on the wellness retreat.

Zipline above the canopy near Puerto Viejo

Canopy zipline courses in the area run a series of cables between platforms in the treetops, often with a short jungle walk between sections. No experience is needed: guides clip you in and handle the braking. Operators typically set weight limits and age minimums, which we pass on when your dates are confirmed.

Sloths, toucans and monkeys are regularly spotted from the platforms, which is the best reason to look up rather than down. Ziplining is one of the ten Premier options, and it pairs well with a slower day before or after. Ask us what the course is like before choosing it as one of your three.

Whitewater rafting on the Caribbean slope

The best known rafting river on this side of Costa Rica is the Pacuare River, which runs from the Talamanca mountains to the Caribbean and is generally rated Class III to IV through its main gorge. From Cahuita a rafting trip is a full day: an early start, a drive to the put-in, several hours on the river and a return by late afternoon.

Operators typically require confident swimmers and set a minimum age, and they make the final call on river conditions. Whitewater rafting is one of the ten Premier options, a good one for the brave half of a group while the others ride horses or visit the park.

Guided waterfall hike

A half-day guided hike into the forested hills behind the coast ends at a waterfall with a pool you can swim in. The walking is moderate; river shoes or strapped sandals help on wet rock. Some guides pair the hike with a cacao demonstration on the way back, which makes it a good day for mixed groups.

The guided waterfall visit is a preset Essential excursion on both retreats and a Signature choice, so almost every guest at Casa Del Soul ends up under a waterfall at some point. For the full list, including horseback riding and snorkelling, see the experiences page.

FAQ

Adventure tour questions, answered

  • What adventure tours can I experience in Cahuita?

ATV tours, ziplining near Puerto Viejo, guided waterfall hikes, whitewater rafting, surf sessions, horseback riding along the coast and snorkelling on the reef in Cahuita National Park are all available in the area. Scheduled retreats include three excursions; which ones you can choose depends on whether you book Essential, Signature or Premier.

  • Are these adventure tours suitable for beginners?

Generally yes, since every tour is guided. Ziplines need nothing but nerve, ATVs are usually automatic, and rafting guides coach first-timers through the rapids. Operators set their own age, weight and swimming requirements, which we pass on when your tour is confirmed. Tell us about injuries or fears when you book.

  • Which package includes whitewater rafting?

Rafting is one of the ten options on the Premier package ($3,500 per guest), alongside ziplining, the ATV tour, a couples massage and a sunset boat experience. Signature guests choose three from five options, which do not include rafting. Celebration and hosted groups can add rafting to their proposal as a separately priced excursion.

  • What happens if it rains?

ATV and zipline tours usually run in rain, which on this coast tends to be warm and short. Rafting depends on river levels, and the operator makes that call on the day. If an excursion cannot run, talk to us and we will look at the alternatives available for your dates.

  • Do I need a driving licence for the ATV tour?

Operators typically ask drivers to hold a valid licence and set a minimum age, with passengers riding double where permitted. Because these rules are the operator's and can change, we confirm the current requirements when your tour is booked. Guests who prefer not to drive can usually ride as a passenger or choose a different excursion.
