Cahuita National Park Tours and Wildlife

Cahuita National Park tours start close to the house. The park protects a stretch of coastal rainforest, white-sand beaches and the coral reef off Punta Cahuita, generally described as the largest on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast. Sloths, howler monkeys, capuchins, raccoons and iguanas live along a flat trail that runs between the forest and the sea. The guided hike is a preset excursion on every Essential retreat at Casa Del Soul, a private retreat home in Cahuita about 20 minutes from Puerto Viejo, and the one guests photograph most.

Wildlife excursions from Cahuita

The guided hike in Cahuita National Park is the anchor. Around it, guests can choose guided rainforest walks, wildlife encounters with local naturalists, national park visits further along the coast, and snorkelling on the reef inside the park. Every scheduled retreat includes three excursions; the park hike is preset on Essential and a choice on Signature and Premier, and the others can be arranged for celebration, couples and hosted groups.

For reef snorkelling, surf and paddleboarding see our water excursions page. On the Wellness & Renewal retreat the park hike tends to fall early in the week.

Can I explore Cahuita National Park with a guided tour?

Yes, and it is worth it. A local naturalist guide with a scope finds in two hours what you would walk past in a day: a sloth folded into a cecropia tree, a basilisk on a stream bank, a snake in the leaf litter. The main trail runs along the coast from the Kelly Creek entrance beside Cahuita village towards the Puerto Vargas entrance, flat and mostly shaded, with a swim at Playa Blanca along the way.

Mornings are usually cooler and better for animals. Cahuita National Park was first protected in 1970 and established as a national park in 1978; it is managed by Costa Rica's national conservation system.

The reef inside the park

Offshore from the trail, the coral reef at Punta Cahuita is the main marine attraction on this coast. It has been damaged over the decades by an earthquake in 1991, by sediment and by bleaching, but it remains a living fringing reef with parrotfish, angelfish, rays and, in season, sea turtles. Snorkelling inside the park's marine area is typically allowed only with a licensed guide, which keeps fins off the coral.

Snorkelling is one of the options Signature and Premier guests can choose, often combined with the trail walk on the same morning. Visibility depends on recent rain and sea conditions, so the guide usually makes the call early in the day.

Guided rainforest walks and wildlife encounters

Beyond the national park, local guides lead rainforest walks in the forest around Cahuita and inland towards the hills, where the mix of birds, frogs, reptiles and mammals changes with the terrain. Toucans, oropendolas and howler monkeys are common sights and sounds on this coast, and a good guide turns a walk into a running commentary on what is living around you.

These walks are optional experiences for celebration, couples and hosted groups, confirmed in your proposal. They suit mixed groups because the pace is slow and the distance short. Guests on the Adventure & Transformation retreat can balance a rafting or ATV day with one.

How the park hike fits your retreat

On both scheduled retreats, the Essential package ($2,250 per guest) includes the guided hike in Cahuita National Park as one of its three preset excursions. Signature ($2,750) and Premier ($3,500) guests can choose it from their lists. Celebration groups and hosted retreats add it to their proposal. We coordinate the logistics for excursions included in your retreat.

Bring walking shoes or sturdy sandals, water, a hat and swimwear for Playa Blanca; a light rain layer is sensible in any month. The hike is flat and suits most fitness levels. See all options on the experiences page.

FAQ

National park questions, answered

  • Can I explore Cahuita National Park with a guided tour?

Yes. Local naturalist guides lead walks along the park's flat coastal trail from the Kelly Creek entrance beside Cahuita village, using a scope to spot sloths, monkeys and snakes, with a swim at Playa Blanca along the way. The guided hike is a preset excursion on the Essential package and a choice on Signature and Premier.

  • How much does Cahuita National Park cost to enter?

The Kelly Creek entrance in Cahuita village has historically operated on a donation basis, while the Puerto Vargas entrance charges a set fee; these arrangements can change, so check current rules before you visit. When the park hike is one of your retreat's included excursions, we coordinate the visit and the guide for you.

  • What is the top attraction in Cahuita?

Cahuita National Park: a coastal trail through rainforest where sloths and monkeys live within sight of the beach, white sand you can swim from, and the coral reef off Punta Cahuita, generally described as the largest on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast. It is the reason most visitors come to the village.

  • Where can I see sloths near Puerto Viejo?

The most reliable place is on the Cahuita National Park trail with a guide and a scope, since sloths are hard to spot unaided. They also live in the trees along the coast between Cahuita and Puerto Viejo, and guided rainforest walks in the area regularly find them. Early mornings tend to be best.

  • Is the park hike suitable for children and older guests?

Generally yes. The main trail is flat, mostly shaded and can be walked at any pace, with the option to turn back whenever the group is ready. Heat and humidity are the main challenges, so go in the morning and carry water. Tell us about mobility needs when you enquire and we will advise honestly.
