How to Get to Cahuita, Costa Rica, from San José Airport
Too long, didn’t read
Fly into San José (SJO), not Liberia; the Caribbean coast is about 4.5–5 hours by road from SJO.
Three ways: shared or private ground transfer, a rental car via Route 32, or a SANSA flight to Limón plus about an hour by road.
Land by 11 AM so you reach Cahuita in daylight (or make the Limón connection); afternoon arrivals usually mean a night near the airport.
Casa Del Soul may coordinate a group transfer on eligible retreat dates for guests arriving by 11 AM; confirmed after booking.
Once in Cahuita you rarely need a car: the village is walkable and excursion transport is coordinated for retreat guests.
Wondering how to get to Cahuita, Costa Rica, from San José airport? Most guests fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) and then travel about 4.5 to 5 hours by road to the South Caribbean coast, or take a short domestic flight to Limón and finish by car. This is the guide we share with guests before they book a retreat at Casa Del Soul, our private retreat home in Cahuita about 20 minutes from Puerto Viejo, with the options laid out and the one timing rule that matters.

Where you land
Almost everyone flies into Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), which serves San José and sits in Alajuela, a short drive west of the city centre. The airport's own site has terminal maps and arrivals information. Liberia (LIR), in Guanacaste in the north west, is the wrong airport for the Caribbean coast; it adds several hours of driving.
If you can choose, choose SJO, and choose a flight that lands by 11 AM. That single decision shapes everything else in this guide, and our getting here page repeats it for a reason.
Option 1: ground transfer from San José
The road journey from SJO to the Cahuita and Puerto Viejo area takes about 4.5 to 5 hours. Shared shuttles and private transfers both operate on this route, and a private vehicle for your group leaves when you land rather than on a fixed schedule. Prices vary by company, season and group size, so compare current quotes rather than relying on numbers from a blog post.
For eligible retreat dates, Casa Del Soul may be able to coordinate a group transfer for guests arriving by 11 AM; details are confirmed after booking. Transportation is not included unless the package says so, but coordination is available, so ask when you reserve your spot.

Option 2: rental car
Driving yourself from SJO means heading east on Route 32 through Braulio Carrillo National Park towards Limón, then south on the coast road to Cahuita. In good conditions it takes about four to five hours. The mountain section of Route 32 is known for fog, heavy rain and occasional closures after landslides, so check conditions before you set off and avoid driving it at night.
Once you arrive, a car is only useful if you plan to explore independently. Excursion transport and ground transport can be coordinated for retreat guests. If you do rent, a vehicle with decent clearance is sensible for the unpaved side roads common on this coast.
Option 3: fly to Limón
SANSA operates domestic flights from San José to Puerto Limón, a short hop compared with the road. From Limón, ground transport south to Cahuita takes roughly an hour, so the whole journey is considerably faster than driving the full distance. The catch is the connection: allow at least three hours between your international arrival and the SANSA departure, because you clear immigration and customs at SJO first.
Check SANSA's current schedule and baggage limits before booking, as small aircraft carry less. This option suits guests who want to skip the mountain road and arrive with daylight to spare.

The 11 AM rule
Whatever you choose, aim to land at SJO by 11 AM. On the road option that gets you to Cahuita before dark; on the flight option it leaves room for the three-hour buffer and a realistic SANSA connection; and it is the cut-off for any coordinated group transfer on eligible retreat dates. International flights landing in the afternoon usually mean either a late-night private transfer or a night near the airport and a morning departure.
Plenty of our guests do exactly that: a night in Alajuela, an early start, lunch on the coast. Build your flights around arrival time rather than price alone.
Getting around once you are in Cahuita
Cahuita village is walkable, the national park entrance is at the edge of town, and taxis and local buses run along the coast to Puerto Viejo, about 20 minutes south. A retreat at Casa Del Soul coordinates transport for the excursions included in your package, so most guests never need a vehicle of their own.
If you are still deciding where to base yourself on this coast, our post on Cahuita or Puerto Viejo compares the two towns, and the retreats page shows upcoming dates and what each package includes.

How do I get to Cahuita from San José?
By road, about 4.5 to 5 hours from Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) by shared shuttle, private transfer or rental car, or by a SANSA domestic flight to Puerto Limón followed by roughly an hour's drive south.
